Dog-Friendly Oregon Coast Hotel: Headlands Coastal Lodge

To be honest, I knew before we even arrived to this dog-friendly Oregon Coast hotel that it was going to be one of my absolute favorite stays with the dogs. How can you beat watching the sunset from your balcony with an ocean front view? Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa is located in Pacific City, on a stunning stretch of coastline alongside the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area. Once we arrived, the hotel exceeded my expectations in many ways. From the beautiful updated design, the serene feeling of the Oregon Coast, and how welcoming the hotel is toward both humans and dogs alike. My only complaint about the hotel would be that we didn’t explore as much of the Oregon Coast as I had hoped because we loved the hotel so much and didn’t want to leave!

So without further ado, below is our full review based on our 5 key dog-friendly criteria. This is one to add to your dog-friendly bucket list!

  1. Pet-friendly design - A+

We stayed in a signature king room, which has a beautiful soaking tub and a fireplace, along with a balcony with views of Cape Kiwanda and Haystack Rock. The room is plenty spacious, and for us the large balcony made the room so dog-friendly. We spent so much time relaxing out there with the dogs and soaking up the views. We were also just a short walk from the building’s exit, where we could take the pups out for potty breaks or have easy access to the beach.

  2. Amenities - A+

When we arrived to the room, there was a welcome card for Zoey and Otto (this wins me over every time!), along with several thoughtful amenities. In addition to high-quality dog bowls and local treats, there was a bed for each dog made by Ginger Beds, a local Oregon small business. I regret to inform you that Zoey has never loved a dog bed so much, so $200 later we ended up coming home with one (but no regrets, she sleeps in it every night now!). When you are coming back from the beach, there is an outdoor shower you can use for cleaning sand off, and there are even separate towels designated to be used by “furry friends."

  3. Proximity to activities - A+

This is definitely a shining moment for Headlands, and exceeded my expectations for a dog-friendly Oregon Coast hotel. The property is situated literally ocean-front, with rooms that provide stunning views from the balcony. You really can’t beat it! You can walk right out to the beach, we enjoyed beautiful morning walks with the dogs on the beach each day. There are also plenty of great hikes in the area. You are also in close proximity to exploring up and down the coast (although you won’t want to leave the hotel!).

  4. Rules & Regulations - A

The rules for dogs at Headlands were pretty standard. To my knowledge there are not any size or breed restrictions. They just ask that you let them know beforehand that you will be bringing your dog(s). They also ask that dogs not be left unattended.

  5. Pet Fees - B-

The dog fee is $40 per night, per dog. In my opinion that is pretty steep, especially for those of us with two pups. I’m not sure why nightly fees rub me the wrong way so much, but they really do. We only stayed for two nights, so it wasn’t outrageous, but if we were here for a week-long stay that would add up really quickly.

I will also mention, we had dinner our first evening at Meridian (the on-site restaurant), which is also dog-friendly. We were impressed by the upscale design and delicious coastal cuisine. Our second evening, we enjoyed room service burgers on our balcony while we drank wine and watched the sunset with the dogs - and that my friends, was magical.
